Retinex Image Processing: Improved Fidelity To Direct Visual Observation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recorded color images differ from direct human viewing by the lack of dynamic range compression and color constancy. Research is summarized which develops the center/surround retinex concept originated by Edwin Land through a singlescale design to a multi-scale design with color restoration (MSRCR). The MSRCR synthesizes dynamic range compression, color constancy, and color rendition and, thereby, approaches fidelity to direct observation.

Spatial aspect of color and scientific implications of Retinex image processing
The history of the spatial aspect of color perception is reviewed in order to lay a foundation for the discussion of retinex image processing. While retinex computations were originally conceived as a model for color constancy in human vision, the impact on local contrast and lightness is even more pronounced than the compensation for changes in the spectral distribution of scene illuminants. I...
متن کاملA multiscale retinex for bridging the gap between color images and the human observation of scenes
Direct observation and recorded color images of the same scenes are often strikingly different because human visual perception computes the conscious representation with vivid color and detail in shadows, and with resistance to spectral shifts in the scene illuminant. A computation for color images that approaches fidelity to scene observation must combine dynamic range compression, color consi...
متن کاملRetinex processing for automatic image enhancement
There has been a revivification of interest in the Retinex computation in the last six or seven years, especially in its use for image enhancement. In his last published concept (1986) for a Retinex computation, Land introduced a center/surround spatial form, which was inspired by the receptive field structures of neurophysiology. With this as our starting point, we develop the Retinex concept ...
متن کاملLuminance-Based Multi-Scale Retinex
Multi-scale retinex (MSR) processing has been shown to be an effective way to enhance image contrast, but it often has an undesirable desaturating effect on the image colours. A colourrestoration method [2,3]can help mitigate this effect, but our experience is that it simply leads to other problems. In this paper we modify MSR so that it preserves colour fidelity while still enhancing contrast....
متن کاملRetinex preprocessing for improved multispectral image classification
The goal of multi-image classification is to identify and label "similar regions" within a scene. The ability to correctly classify a remotely sensed multi-image of a scene is affected by the ability of the classification process to adequately compensate for the effects of atmospheric variations and sensor anomalies. Better classification may be obtained if the multi-image is preprocessed befor...
